lockdown or lack of interest, Orange Line bus project could not be resumed

KARACHI: Development work on several projects in the city has started after easing of lockdown but due to lack of interest of Sindh government, development work on Orange Line bus project could not be resumed.

In the budget for the financial year 2020-21, although the Sindh government has allocated Rs. 843.3 million for the Orange Line, the development work has come to a standstill due to non-release of funds in the budget for the current financial year.

The Orange Line bus project was started in 2016 under the supervision of Sindh Mass Transit Authority and was to be completed in one year but despite the passage of four and a half years, 75% of its work has been completed.

According to Sindh government sources, top officials of the Sindh government have appointed officers on political grounds in the Sindh Mass Transit Authority and the provincial transport department for their nefarious purposes, whose incompetence has slowed down the project.

The Sindh Mass Transit Authority is also responsible for the procurement and operational management of buses for the Orange Line bus project.
