Diamer Bhasha Dam’s Construction to start in few weeks: WAPDA Chairman

Islamabad: Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Muzammil Hussain announced on Thursday that the construction work of the Diamer Basha Dam project would start in a few weeks, a news source reported.

He further informed that the construction work on the Mohmand and Dasu dams was also in progress; with both expected to be completed by 2024. Hussain said that 21 power plants were working round-the-clock to supply power continuously to the people despite the prevailing pandemic situation. He revealed that the station employees were working in shifts to avoid contracting the infection.

Additionally, he stated that WAPDA had added up to 2,487 megawatts of clean and affordable energy into the national grid after the completion of several projects over the last two years; remarking that affordable hydropower was essential to diminishing WAPDA’s dependency on Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The electric power produced by public hydropower projects cost PKR 2 per unit, while the electricity generated by IPPs cost PKR 18 per unit, he added.
