Karachi: The World Bank (WB) announced that it would provide USD 15 million for the cleaning of drains in the city and uplifting the landfill site at Jam Chakro.
According to sources, the Sindh government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will assist the WB on this project. CLICK and Sweeping Project Director Zubair Channa said that the cleaning of the drains would begin from next week. He added that there would be a special cell established at Jam Chakro for garbage disposals.
According to details, the KMC would provide a list of 38 drains within its jurisdiction and a feasibility report on their fixings and cleaning to the provincial government. This list will also include drains under the DMCs’ control. The KMC and DMCs will inform the Sindh government about their fund needs to receive them accordingly.
Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhter has directed the DMCs to generate a list on the number of choked drains that need cleaning before the monsoon-rains begin.
